The Matanchen Bay Cultural Center is comprised of an art gallery display area, a public library, a computer center, a children’s reading room, language classrooms, an outside courtyard with stage area, and other multiuse areas.

However, in reality it is so much more than a collection of its parts. It serves as a community center that helps brings together the various diverse groups that comprise our local communities located around Matanchen Bay.

ATICAMA LIBRARY



The Library consists of over 5,000 books that range from Spanish Language reference books to current English language works of fiction. A library card is necessary to check out most books.

The adult Spanish language books were donated by CONACULTA (a Mexican federal agency). Our many supporters have donated the Spanish language and bilingual children’s books.

There is also an exchange program for English language paperbacks. Bring in two books and exchange for a different book or donate 10 pesos for a book if you have nothing to exchange.

Carmen Evenson (mexicangal@juno.com) has organized the English language section of the Library. Please contact Carmen if you would like to help keep the section organized and up-to-date.

COMPUTER CENTER



An integral part of the Cultural Center is the Computer Center. We have space designed to handle nine (9) computers and currently have three (3) new computers donated by CONACULTA (a Mexican Federal Agency). We need a minimum of six (6) more computers to handle the basic requirements of our student users. If you have access to desktop computers, we can definitely use them!

The Cultural Center also provides free high-speed wireless Internet. Bring your laptop and check your email! The password for the Internet is available from the Librarians.

CHILDREN’S ROOM



The Children’s Room is designed to be an area where kids can be kids. There is furniture specially designed for parents to spend quality time with their children – reading, working on numbers, coloring, playing games, and various other activities.

A pre-kindergarten class is also held in the room to help local children get a head start to their education!

The room is totally covered by bright, colorful murals of animals, the alphabet, and the numbers, which were designed and painted by our own local artist, Gilles Brault.
