Puerto Vallarta Mourns the Passing of Long Time Resident Wayne McLeod Martha Ramirez Ruiz - Vallarta Opina

Wayne McLeod, Editor in Chief of Vallarta Today, passed away late yesterday morning at Medasist Hospital in Puerto Vallarta, losing his battle with lung cancer of over six months.

Originally from Vancouver, BC, Wayne joined the Vallarta community around 25 years ago, where he brought his enormous journalism talents to our city.

Wayne studied radio and television at the Technological Institute of British Columbia and went on to be a screenwriter for television and film, including the series of "Sweating Bullets." He worked at the "Vancouver Show" where he was on the team of television productions for stars such as Paul Anka and Tom Jones, collaborating with CBS, which led him to live for three months in Germany, Italy and Greece.

Wayne's professional life before coming to Vallarta was a constant adventure around the world, writing and creating scripts for television and cinema.

In Vallarta, Wayne met the love of his life, Laura López Labra, who shared his life and stayed by his side throughout his cancer battle. Sincere condolences to Laura, our friend too.

Wayne was an example of dedication, perseverance, ability and above all, love of the journalism craft where he served as Editor in Chief of Vallarta Today. In spite of his fight with cancer, Wayne continued to do what he loved most, writing. Wayne will be remembered as being an excellent co-worker, friend and someone who has contributed to the community unobtrusively from different areas.

Wayne is now at Funeraria San José on Colombia in the colony of December 5, downtown Puerto Vallarta.

A memorial mass will be held tonight, Monday, October 29, 2012, at 7:00 pm, at the Virgin of Guadalupe Cathedral in downtown Puerto Vallarta.

We miss you, Wayne, and send sincere condolences to Laura, the family and all of us who were lucky enough to know him.

Lucy & Gil have really gotten to know Wayne's mom, Gloria, this week and she is a remarkable woman - no surprise! Gloria wants the memorial to be celebratory and fun. She would like people to step up and share their favorite moments with Wayne, their most humorous moments, etc. She expressly stated that she does not want the memorial to be doom and gloom, but rather a celebration of Wayne's life and his wonderful character and personality.

Gloria is also insisting on treating everyone to one drink. Beyond that, you can put some pesos into the deserving pockets of Nacho Daddy's. There might be some chips, etc., but no real food, unless you'd like to order some.
