Kittens, kittens and more kittens! We had 32 kittens and 2 adults left at the shelter gate or dumped over the fence in February, some as young as a few days old. Fortunately, Karen and Walt Trolson were visiting the day after four teeny ones were left in a sack and volunteered to take them home to bottle feed. At that age, it is a big task with almost constant feeding and massaging until they learn to eat soft food and poop on their own.

Naming them and then keeping track of their identities and all their medical records is also a huge task for Dra. Eva when you have so MANY! Sadly, the ones taken from their mama too early often have poor immune systems and do not survive despite our best efforts. The clinic and all the casitas are now full.

Shelter Update

Not much news except that we are FULL! We are always sad when we have to release into the yard some of the older kittens who have been passed over for adoption... but we simply have to make room for the new young ones. Dra. Eva and Dr. Alberto have agreed to work some extra days in March to try to keep up with all the spay/neuter as well as make time for some of the yard cats who need medical attention.

Our Thursday volunteers have been a big help in working to socialize the kittens and give them a better chance for adoption, as well as giving the garden cats the attention they always crave! Jose and Carlos are working hard to keep the casitas and grounds in good shape. Hilda has a never-ending job keeping up with all the laundry! The shelter children just started back to school 3 days a week after two years of home schooling.

Adoptions

PetCo Adoption Center is still our main source of adoption in the last two years. February was slow with 5 adoptions. People mainly want the younger kittens so that’s what we send there on weekends. But we do keep one casita with adoptable “teenagers.”
