Saturday night was the fundraiser for Puppy Paradise. The shelter is a house of three stories with dogs roaming free.

Yvonne has the gala at her home high above the bay in Conchas Chinas. Amy and I were both there. Sharon Tognietti, a great supporter of animal welfare, invited my husband and me. Amy and her friend Ceci Paredes were there as guests, as well. Ceci works with AITE, who has been providing technical assistance to the Yvonneka Foundation to create their Mexican nonprofit.

Yvonne and Sharon

I saw so many old friends from my time at the SPCAPV, Corrine and Casandra. Corrine and her husband Michael donated the PEACEAnimal trailer to us. With both Gretchen and Janice (SPCAPV) gone, the landscape of animal welfare has changed and new groups are forming. What struck me is how over the years there has been spoken and unspoken competition from various groups.

I saw representatives from many groups in the Bay all there to support each other. We need that now more than ever. We are all doing the same work of ending suffering of animals in Banderas Bay. Supporting each other in our causes is so fundamental.

I felt camaraderie and hope for all our animals. All the shelters are full to capacity and with the unfortunate flood at SPCAPV during the hurricane they aren’t able to rescue as many dogs.

Our job of spay/neuter means less homeless animals and less breeding which filters down and means the shelters can save and adopt out dogs and cats without as much abject sadness of the ones who can’t be saved. It is so magnificent to live in this community with so many dedicated animal advocates who put money and endless effort forward for our furry friends.

We have a long way to go, and yet progress is evident all around the Bay. Lucky us and lucky animals. While the job will never be completely done it is rewarding to see an improving environment for dogs and cats that also call Puerto Vallarta home.

And the entertainment was out of this world: "Stevie" Richless, Enrique de Allende and Anna Maria Kaufmann.

A good night was had by all.
