May was a month of building, we have put roofs over structures and kennels in the shelter to help keep the rain off the dogs.

Jessica writes about our new partnership with Wet Noses Rescue out of Punta Mita, focusing on immunization as well as spay and neuter clinics.

This month, Johanna Denesiuk has written a great article about the tummy upsets your best friend can be suffering from and how to help. We all have those days where the poop or puke has us concerned.

The dogs that are currently in protocols (vaccinations and sterilization), as well as those that are ready for adoption, are listed in our Adoptable Facebook Album.

Our first step towards eradicating distemper and over population has begun

In my last article I wrote about how terrible it was having a distemper break out at the shelter and the awful disease that it is…. I made the promise that we were going to work towards the eradication of the virus in the area.

We are so happy to announce that we have started!!

Working together with a great Rescue Organization called Wet Noses led by Kristi Lahr and her amazing team we were able to start our first vaccination clinic for 20 cats and 29 dogs, followed by a Spay and Neuter clinic that will take place on June 19, 2021.

The clinics will consist of vaccinating cats and dogs 15 days before Spay/Neuter clinics in order to provide a medically safe environment for the animals being fixed.

Registration for the S/N clinics will take place the day of the vaccinations, so only cats and dogs that have been vaccinated previously will be able to get fixed.

The purpose is to avoid any disease exposure the day of the S/N clinics and also to eradicate this terrible disease called Distemper.

Tick and flea medication will also be given to all the animals being S/N.

The clinics will take place in a very poor town called La Mision and we will continue to do clinics there for the next 3 or 4 months in order to try to eliminate the high population of strays in the area.

Once we conclude with this town we will move on and do the same in a different town with a high number of stray dogs and cats.

Wet Noses and A Dog’s New Life AC have joined forces in order to make a difference for the voiceless but also to support and educate the community how to provide good health care for their beloved pets.

Tummy tamers
 
When you are not sure which way to go.
 
Almost everyone who has had a dog will need to deal with tummy upsets resulting in vomiting and/or diarrhea, at some point. This can be messy and confining your dog to an area with an easily cleaned floor might be a good idea. Keep in mind, your pet is ill and as well-intentioned as they are about going potty outside, accidents happen. This is not the time to train or scold.

If your dog has a sensitive stomach you can help him by looking at the foods he eats and supplementing his diet. Fermented foods and raw foods will help to repopulate and balance the microbes in your dog’s stomach.

While treating your dog, withholding food or providing a bland diet for 24 hours may give your dog’s stomach an opportunity to rest and recuperate. Never withhold water, however, especially since dehydration could become a problem with ongoing problems.

If you have not seen improvement within 24 hours, it would be time to check with your vet.

The microbes in your dog’s stomach can be killed off by drugs like antibiotics or vaccines, etc., food poisoning, or a buildup of toxins in the kidney or liver disease.

Here are some common remedies. Choose which best describes your dog’s condition:

Arsenicum is useful for dogs with many acute conditions but mainly for diarrhea and vomiting and as the first line of defense.

Aloe Diarrhea involves a mixture of watery and solid material (may include blood) with gas with other symptoms, including rumbling or gurgling noises, or a bloated abdomen. Sometimes, your pet may not be aware anything has passed. Can be a result of antibiotics.

Nux vomica is effective for diarrhea from changes in feeding, over-eating, or change in diet. This remedy can treat vomiting that is often followed by retching v.Nux vomica can be life-supporting if your dog has ingested a toxic substance - it can be given immediately to your dog on your way to the vet. A good remedy to have available.

Roofs over the Kennels

Lots of work has been done over the last couple of months installing roofs over the kennels, the bathroom building, and in the large back kennel and the play area.

Besides giving the dogs much-needed shade from the sun that's getting hotter every day, it will also give them protection from the rains.

Please consider making a donation to offset the expenses incurred with the building materials. All installation was done by volunteers to keep the costs as low as we possibly could. The costs for materials have totaled so far $80,000 pesos or $4000 USD.

We have been holding a spay and neuter clinic approximately once per month out at the shelter.  With the number of rescues we receive every month, as well as the puppies that are old enough to be sterilized we seem to have a good amount each month.

Thanks to all of our volunteers, because without you guys we could not do the number of dogs that we do in one day. Also special thanks to Dr. Poli who is our go-to veterinarian for sterilizing our dogs.
