The Municipal DIF System of Puerto Vallarta as part of the Comprehensive Care Disabilities Program (PAID) with the support of the Rotary Club Puerto Vallarta has begun a drive for cataract surgery with the intention of restoring sight to the elderly.
Those interested must be submitted for evaluation by August 17, 2012, at the DIF facilities in La Aurora.
Juan Arana, President of the Rotary Club Puerto Vallarta, said in an interview that anyone can be affected by cataracts but the focus of this drive is to help older adults regain vision.
The leader of the Rotarians said such operations cost between 14 and 19 thousand pesos but with the support of altruistic institutions, beneficiaries will only have to pay 2 thousand pesos for the surgery.
This is the first part of a medical evaluation process that will culminate in November with the operations taking place in Guadalajara by specialists who will not charge for their work, only for the use of equipment and drugs.
DIF Vallarta also has a campaign to provide wheelchairs and canes for people who require them. Those interested must submit an application to the DIF facilities.
