Passengers will soon arrive, and depart from, the Calgary International Airport’s new terminal as the building opens its doors to travellers this morning.
The construction project, which cost nearly $2 billion, took nearly five years to complete but airport officials believe the effort will reduce stress while creating a relaxing, flying experience. The terminal includes security and custom innovations as well as automated check-in machines for passengers and their baggage.
The newest area of the airport has a 300-room hotel and a total of 50 restaurants and shopping outlets.
Each year 15 million passengers fly through the Calgary International Airport and officials suspect that number will increase.
“I can’t help but think that this beautiful new facility is going to be a big part of the story as well,” said Henry Stevens of the Calgary Airport Authority.
The first departure from the new international terminal is a WestJet flight scheduled for 6:00 am Monday destined for Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
