Puerto Vallarta, which in January of this year, became the newest city to say I do to same-sex weddings legally, was named the No.1 "off the beaten path" or "surprisingly gay friendly" travel destination in the world in a survey pertaining to gay summer travel and conducted in conjunction with the New York Times, and Scruff. The ranking also indicates positivity pertaining to safety in the destination.
Released on August 18, the survey received 1,333 responses from guys all over the world and found that gay guys travel more often than the general population. And when they do travel, they spend more, often travel alone, and to different places. Over 120,000 trips in July alone were registered as part of the survey, which is roughly 40 percent more trips than the average trip activity during the winter and spring months.
In May, Puerto Vallarta was also the first city in Mexico to be granted Gay Travel Approved status by GayTravel.com.
Brought into the tourism spotlight by celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor and Tennessee Williams, Puerto Vallarta has been one of North America's favorite gay winter beach destination for decades. The city is Mexico's only beach destination that boasts a gayborhood in its Zona Romantica, home to a broad array of café, restaurants, bars and nightclubs, as well as hotels and operators with an LGBT clientele.
