Southwest will launch direct service from Oakland to Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas early next year, the airline announced Wednesday.
The new flights represent Southwest's first international nonstop flights from the Bay Area, and add to the airline's stable of affordable, convenient flights to U.S. cities and its growing list of international destinations, including Mexico and the Caribbean.
Southwest will begin the direct flights on Feb. 12, 2017, pending approval from the United States Department of Transportation. The airline is confident that its application will be approved, said Vice President and Controller Leah Koontz, who made the announcement at the airport. There will be one round trip flight daily to San Jose del Cabo airport and Puerto Vallarta.
Currently, those who want to fly internationally from the Bay Area of California on Southwest must first land in Orange County, or airports in Texas, Florida and Georgia.
