Calling the just-opened Punta de Mita highway "new" may be a bit of a stretch, since it's been under construction for over six years. At one point, construction was halted for (depending on which rumor you subscribe to) either legal issues with the local ejido, environmental issues concerning preservation of the Nayarit-native jaguar, legal and financial problems with the NAHUI residential development that created the need for an alternate route in the first place or just plain old-fashioned budgeting problems.
Now that six years of dust has settled (but much loose gravel remains) we can report that having just finished traveling the "new" road, it's a gas! Where, this side of the Tepic/Guadalajara toll road have you seen a 110 km/h speed limit? That is a testimonial to how unlike (curvy) its predecessor this road is.
I didn't go all the way into the El Anclote beachfront to give you a final countdown BUT from the start of the new route just past the arroyo in La Cruz to the newer Pemex station just before Punta de Mita took just over four minutes. The highlight, besides the speed limit might just be the exit for Destiladeras Beach, a question mark in all talks and rumors of the new highway until now. The road is also basically landscaped with palm trees in the center meridian.
I think it's safe to say that Punta de Mita restaurants and businesses will be seeing a spike in activity. What seemed a somewhat daunting, not to mention dangerous drive is now quite easy and rapid. A resounding two thumbs up to "gobermiento de la gente"!
