As part of the Southside Shuffle in Old Town Vallarta, Galleria Dante invites you to the cocktail opening exhibition of Nino Magaña on Friday January 8th 2016 from 6:00 until 10:00 pm.

Nino Magaña

A native of Guadalajara, born in 1970, Nino is one of 10 brothers. He began painting at the age of 8. At 15, he visited the Instituto Cultural Cabanas, where a painting entitled "El Abrazo" by Jorge Gonzalez Camarena is engraved in his mind to this day. In his 20s he worked as a commercial painter (birds, still-life, landscapes) developing his skill and providing him with an income which allowed him to explore and develop his own style. He would go on to paint murals in Mexico, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

After winning his first award at the Salon October in 1990, he had the confidence and freedom to express his true passion for art. In 2008 he returned to University and obtained a degree in music. He also has a master's degree in art and is committed to the dissemination and promotion of culture. Nino Magaña is a multidisciplinary artist with a 25-year professional career within the arts, dominating the techniques of: oil, acrylic, mixed with texture, impasto, painting, sculptures to mention a few of the mediums he uses for each of his projects. He does it in a normal/informal way allowing him to achieve a richness in his work.

A constant in many of his pieces is the female body. This has its origin, says the artist, in the fact that women are the generator of many things. He prefers to paint in a large format, because he likes to feel overtaken by the painting. It's like being before Goliath. He likes the sensation that the painting mounts you, that they are on top of you. And he feels that the spectator might like that too. His other passions are cooking in the kitchen with his wife, playing the piano and guitar. He is a devoted family man. His discipline extends to his diet and his Hindu practices.

In June 2015, Nino Magaña fulfilled a dream to have an exhibition of his art at a prestigious museum.  On June l9th his show entitled: “VIAJE A NINGUNA PARTE”,  opened at the  MUSEO FRANCISCO GOITIA in Zacatecas.  The show focused on fantasy, movement, reality and light. Nino’s artistic career has spanned 25 years.  His formal studies were conducted at the School of Art CASA Colomos and the Cabañas Cultural Institute in Guadalajara, where he studied sculpture and painting.

Later he continued his training in various workshops of famous painters like Jose Parra and Jose Espinoza Moraila, and has combined his artistic performance with teaching.

Possessing a technique that dialogues between the precise finishes and adventurous classical school of avant-garde experimentation, from revealing the virtuosity of his lines and spontaneous "accidents" with which every piece is built, Nino coins in his work the expressive power of the figurative fantasy with surreal characters who come and go by expressionism and impressionism impregnating a hint of nostalgia and melancholy.

In his career he has more than 15 exhibitions and nearly 30 solo exhibitions in various galleries and cultural venues, among which the Tonallan Museum and the Palace of Justice of the Supreme Court in Jalisco, the Angela Peralta Theater in San Miguel de Allende, Art Space in Televisa Guadalajara and some galleries of Puerto Vallarta, Los Angeles and San Francisco California.

He was awarded second place in the contest "Hall of October 1994" award by the Board of the Fiestas de Octubre in Guadalajara.
