The Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board is working with the producers of Vallarta Pride to increase its Day of the Dead Celebrations with a six-day cultural festival that will include a series of events and activities intended to make the celebration one of the most colorful of the end of the year and beginning of Puerto Vallarta’s high season.
Held from October 28 to November 2, the Puerto Vallarta Day of the Dead Festival will promote traditional elements of the celebration as well as new artistic angles and interpretations. Traditional installation of altars will be done in hotels, restaurants and public spaces. An interactive altar will be on display at Lazaro Cardenas Park in which you are invited to add your decorations. Organizers will be giving out a passport to the installations for those interested in doing their own tour of the altars.
The festival will also include a film festival, a food tasting and a series of concerts, folkloric ballet and a presentation of a series of photos on the theme of death, as it is viewed by popular Mexican culture. The Friday Night Music Festival will take place outside the cemetery at 7:00 pm in 5 Diciembre where you can purchase fresh flowers and candles to decorate the cemetery.
Organizers will also try to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the number of Catrinas in one place, the playful visualization of death was made famous by Jose Guadalupe Posada, and has received notoriety across the US and Canada as of recently. If you want to help break the record for the most live Catrinas in one place (the record is held by Mexico City with 500 catrinas), show up on Saturday, October 31, 8:00 pm by the Rosita Hotel at the north end of the Malecon and march to the Pier in Los Muertos in Zona Romantica for the count. This will be followed by a beer and music festival on Francisca Rodriguez at the pier. Dress up and help Puerto Vallarta break the Catrina record.
Here is official schedule for 6 days of fun, excitement, culture and love as we honor and remember our loved ones:
