Puerto Vallarta from the air (Postandfly)

The tourist destination of Puerto Vallarta is the most expensive city in Mexico for buying a house, says the online real estate portal Lamudi.

With an average price per square meter of 22,314 pesos, or US $1,300, Puerto Vallarta is well ahead of second-place Oaxaca, whose average price came in at 13,900 pesos.

Despite a murder rate of 107 per 100,000 inhabitants that was reported earlier this year, Acapulco is the third-most expensive city for buying a house, followed by Cancún in fourth place. Prices per square meter in those cities were 12,932 and 12,198 pesos, respectively.

With a slightly lower per-meter cost of 12,108, Mexico City was ranked fifth.

Lamudi’s CEO in Latin America, Kalina Hadzhitodorova, said both Puerto Vallarta and Cancún are attractive to foreign buyers who wish to live in Mexico, a fact reflected in property prices — many are given in US dollars. In the case of Vallarta, 47% of listings are priced in dollars, while the national average is 8.7%.
