Mexico: First 20 Tonnes of Avocado from Nayarit Shipped to Spain Fresh Plaza

The Mexican Secretary of Economy, Ildefonso Guajardo, gave the green light to the first 20 tonne shipment of Hass avocados to Madrid, Spain, during a working trip in the western state of Nayarit.

Only in 2015, the INAES, through its delegation in Nayarit, invested 6 million pesos (350,263 US dollars/303,000 Euro) in four social organizations devoted to the production of avocados, with the goal of obtaining the first batches able to meet the necessary standards for export, pointed out the secretary in a bulletin.

The packing of 4,930 tonnes is expected, 550 of which will be exported to Spain, France, the Netherlands and Germany. 146 permanent and temporary direct jobs will be created and 450 hectares will be certified in Good Agricultural Practices.

In the town of El Carrizal, in the municipality of Xalisco, which has made its first shipment of Hass avocados meeting export standards, Guajardo said the true capital of a country is the productive capacity of its communities.

He stressed that the most important thing is not the equipment, but the attitude, alliances and solidarity to transform society with productive projects. "It all comes down to creating the right conditions for producers to generate employment and allow for new living conditions," he pointed out.

At the event, during which he also toured the packing facilities, the official said that these projects are encouraging because, besides being productive, they are also sustainable.

Governor Sandoval explained that, with these initiatives, Nayarit is bound to pursue progress and development.

"Today we are bringing avocados to Europe, with hard work and discipline; today we are going to Europe to show that this small entity will become Mexico's best producer," he stated.
