Six couples said "I do" before a judge in Puerto Vallarta at the Civil Registry on Friday, August 7, 2015.

"What a historic day for the society of Puerto Vallarta taking the request of six couples to marry before the registrar," said Hector Ramirez Betancourt, rights advocate.

Ramirez Betancourt took the opportunity to thank the Diverse Union of Jalisco, Families in Diversity, Collectivo Vallarta, LGBT, ACT, LGBT AC, SETAC, Vallarta Pride, among other associations and individuals who have joined this claim before the law.

It should be noted that the Civil Code of Jalisco does not include same-sex marriage, but LGBT couples continue the effort in various states, including Jalisco, to obtain a legal marriage.

States like Oaxaca, Coahuila, Yucatan and Quintana Roo have also held civil marriages by "amparos."

The Congress of Jalisco approved the Law on Free Coexistence last November, a legal concept that is made official before a notary and not before a judge, but as in a marriage allows same-sex couples to share rights such as inheritance or succession of property, the right to claim pensions, and social security.
