No Booze This Weekend in Vallarta Due to Elections Team Angels - PVAngels

Update: According to Informador, CANIRAC and the Government of Jalisco have reached an agreement to amend the Prohibition of Ley Seca in restaurants and hotels this weekend stating "customers may be served alcohol with food consumption."

The Ley Seca, or Dry Law, normally only applies to presidential elections in Mexico and some state elections, but will happen this weekend in Puerto Vallarta with the municipal elections on Sunday, June 7.

The ban on the sale of alcohol begins Friday, June 5 at midnight and is lifted at midnight on Sunday. This applies to everything from liquor stores, convenience stores, larger chain stores, supermarkets, clubs, bars, restaurants and hotels.

The law dates back to the Mexican revolution at the beginning of the 20th century and bans the sale of booze 24 hours before a major election and on the day of the vote, though some areas are now exempt from the restriction.

There are no elections in the neighboring state of Nayarit, but rumor has it that there will be breathalyzer check-points throughout Puerto Vallarta and most likely entering and leaving the state of Nayarit.

In the past, some establishments in the tourist areas have been known to "buck the law" which makes them subject to large fines and closure. Many of the local restaurants and bars will not be open this weekend.

So, it might be a good idea to stock up on your booze supply before Friday at midnight just in case you are entertaining or have an urge to consume.
