Riviera Nayarit opens its marlin and sailfish season with one of the most appealing attractions for sport fishing lovers.

The International Fishing Tournament of San Blas, organized by Nayarit's Sport Fishing Club, turns 52 this year, and celebrates by offering millions of pesos in prizes, including six cars, outboard boat motor, fishing gear, dinners, hotel packages and trophies.

This traditional and notorious sport fishing tournament will take place from May 30 to June 3, 2012, at the port of San Blas. This privileged location boasts an enormous diversity of wildlife that not only makes it one of the favorite spots to do sport fishing, but has earned its name as the best place to do bird watching in Latin America.

This competitive tournament offers over 2,000,000 pesos in prizes, and will welcome over 100 participants.

2012 Tournament Prizes

The 52nd edition of the International Fishing Tournament of San Blas offers prizes in three different categories.

• Sailfish

1st Place - Nayarit Prize - Nissan Frontier Truck 2012, Dinner for 2 at Las Pampas Restaurant, Commemorative trophy.

2nd Place - Riviera Nayarit Prize - Nissan March Sense Auto 2012, Dinner for 2 at Las Pampas Restaurant, Polarized Sunglasses, Commemorative trophy.

3rd Place - Marina Turistica - Nissan March Sense Auto 2012, Commemorative trophy.

4th Place - Zaragoza Marine - Professional Sportfishing Equipment, Commemorative trophy.

• Marlin

Special Prizes

Sierra Autos of Tepic will award a Nissan March Sense 2012 for the first sailfish weighing over 70 kg.

There will be a special raffle for all anglers participating in the tournament for a 2012 Mercury Outboard Motor.

6:00 am - Official Start and Boat Departures from San Blas Port
2:00 to 6:00 pm - Reception and Fish Weigh-ins
6:00 pm - Closing of Weigh-ins
7:00 pm - Bohemian Night

Friday, June 1 - Day of Rest
2:00 pm - Fishing Tournament Food Festival, Live Entertainment and Special Prizes.

The enrollment fee per team is 19,000 pesos, which includes the Sailfish Jackpot.

To register, go to the Tepic Sportfishing Club Registration Page, fill in the form completing all required fields, choose your form of payment and attach your bank deposit slip or proof of wire transfer file (jpg, bmp, doc, pdf), and print out your proof of payment to show as your proof of registration upon your arrival.

The port of San Blas is a romantic Mexican town that evokes old times, not only because of the important role it played in Mexico's history, but also from an architectural standpoint that reminds us of Mexico's glory during Colonial times and during the first years as an independent country.

Mere references to this place inspired the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, who despite the fact that he never visited San Blas, wrote nostalgic verses about it: "Oh San Blas' bells that toll/you recall the past in vain! The past listens not to your prayer/leaving behind the nightly shadows / the world turns into the light:/dawn is everywhere."

This rich history confers a special ambiance to this port that has a wide biodiversity and is one of the most beautiful in this country, offering an opportunity to enjoy nature in a unique, preserved environment.

San Blas is also a tourist attraction because of its beautiful beaches, which include Playa Las Islitas, Playa El Borrego, Matanchén, Los Cocos, and Playa del Rey, and also because of its gastronomy, which was deeply influenced by Asia and Europe, and because of a number of small and comfortable high-quality hotels.
