Puerto Vallarta has long been a destination for seniors and snowbirds trying to get away from the cold up North. The town has grown up into an amenity filled tropical garden, ripe for seniors. All of the amenities that you could find in a Southern California beach town are here, but at a fraction of the price. So here are some of our top reasons to check out Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for possible retirement or Assisted Living.

Medical, Dental & Prescription Costs

We feel that one of the top reasons to look into retirement or assisted living in Puerto Vallarta is the high level of medical and dental care. Puerto Vallarta is the #1 International destination for medical and dental tourism for Americans and Canadians. The doctors here are beyond top notch and have intense & expensive training to specialize in specific areas of medicine. Medical procedures can cost 1/10th of what they do in the USA. The author of this article recently had to see a specialist for a respiratory problem. So he went to a specialist and was treated for 500 pesos (approx $38). The 3 medications prescribed, cost about the same. Dental is no different. The author of this piece recently had 3 wisdom teeth removed. It cost 200 pesos (approx $15 USD) to get a cleaning and consultation with a dentist that spoke English. The wisdom teeth removal cost 2,000 pesos ($154 USD). Everything was top notch and no problems.

Prescription costs are the big saver for Seniors. Medications in Mexico are exactly the same as in the USA or Canada. The regulations are strong here, but the cost to produce medications is low. These low costs are actually passed on to consumers instead of trying to get every last penny out of them. Medications here will have a cost savings of at least 50%. Meaning they will cost half of what they do back home and in many cases much less than that! Those savings alone can help save hundreds if not thousands of dollars every month.

These low costs offer one more huge advantage. You will no longer have to deal with all the bureaucratic red tape of Medicare or Medicaid. The prescription drug savings offered in Mexico are lower than the savings you would receive from Medicare. Medicaid only helps if you make less than $1,500 a month and need assisted living or it will help with a little bit of the cost of nursing care for up to 90 days. If you retire to a community like Mexico Assisted Living then you never have to worry about nursing care or doctor visits. Even the rooms have an ocean view, so every day will be filled with neon colored sunsets over the Pacific Ocean. Climate

Puerto Vallarta has a beautiful sub-tropical climate. Every day is a beach day here. The fall and winters are the most mild with temperatures in the high 70's (23 c) and low 80's (30 c). Spring and Summer the weather stays around the high 80's to 90's. September is considered rainy season. Every day at 5 PM like clockwork the clouds roll in and rain comes in a torrential downpour. Lightning and thunder are everywhere and it feels like a tropical storm, but without the wind. It is really fun to sit on your balcony and watch. If things get a little hot for you at any point then a place like Mexico Assisted Living is all inclusive and has air conditioning included in the price! You will always feel like you are on vacation with the beautiful climate and beaches of Puerto Vallarta.

Culture & Food

Puerto Vallarta is a great mix of cultures and food. The local culture and the ancient Native cultures mix perfectly here. The native art is found all over town as well as accomplished modern artists. There are art galleries all over downtown Puerto Vallarta that exhibit old and new. The culture is also a melting pot. Puerto Vallarta is one of the top destinations for American and Canadian expatriates. You could live here the rest of your life and never learn Spanish. The locals almost all speak English or at least enough to communicate and the high number of North Americans ensures you will find someone close by that speaks English. The central part of downtown has a huge boardwalk and shops along the ocean. This area is mostly for tourists or for a nice evening walk for locals. Past the central part of downtown is what is referred to as old town. This part of town has the highest concentration of retirees and locals. The best restaurants are here and some amazing shopping. The town doesn’t end here though. If you head north along the bay you get to the Marina. It also has a boardwalk along the boat docks and plenty of restaurants and shopping. Further North is Nuevo Vallarta which is a more modern part of Vallarta, with perfectly paved roads and beautiful homes and shopping. It looks like a clean suburb of Miami such as Boca Raton, FL. Past Nuevo are a number of smaller beach towns and then at the end of the bay are Punta Mita and Sayulita. These are incredible surf towns. They have a very laid back vibe and are great for day trips to see the artesinal shops and enjoy incredible food. The most important thing in Puerto Vallarta is the food. This is a food junkies paradise. The local Mexican cuisine is out of this world. People don’t realize, but most of the things associated with Mexico are from the State of Jalisco, which Puerto Vallarta is in. Things like mariachi, tequila and amazing foods come from this state. The local cuisine uses the vast array of spices and peppers grown here to make truly intricate flavors that you won’t be able to live without. This does not mean that everything is super spicy. They focus more on the flavor and then you can add spice as wanted. Mexican food is not the only thing here. There is cuisine from all around the world including good old American Comfort foods.

Restaurants cost much less in Puerto Vallarta. No more fancy meals that cost an arm and a leg. A fancy meal can cost $20 usd here with drinks. The taco stands are beyond amazing and it is $1 usd per taco. The quality of food for the price is unmatched. If you prefer to cook yourself, don’t worry. There are many local produce markets and butcher shops to get the freshest ingredients. If you want things similar to back home or have a favorite product, you can find that too. We have Walmart and Costco here. They have all the same things as the USA or Canada.
