Immigration authorities at the Puerto Vallarta International Airport ((PVR) turned away 53 foreign visitors between January and July, 2014 when it was found they had a criminal record for acts of pedophilia.
The National Immigration Institute (INM) began implementing a program call Guardian Angel in December of last year. Anyone entering the country who has a record for pederasty is denied entry.
The national database called Plataforma Mexico is connected to Interpol and other systems and allows officials to run a check on visitors.
Immigration authorities were given the power in 2011 to deny entry to anyone with a criminal record. An INM spokesman said the airport at Puerto Vallarta has seen the largest number of travelers turned away, and the majority are Americans and Canadians.
“In the majority are Americans and Canadians between 40 and 65 years old; many of them have recent records. They try to enter Mexico because they think nothing will happen to them, as used to be the case.”
The INM is reported to have increased its vigilance due to cases of youth prostitution in recent years, citing that of American businessman Thomas Frank White, who was arrested in 2003 on charges of child pornography and drug trafficking.
He was convicted in 2005 and died last year at the age of 78 after spending 10 years in a Jalisco jail. White always maintained he was the victim of extortion. A book telling his story and defending his claim was published last year.
The extortionists are alleged to be in jail in Jalisco after having been apprehended for another offense.
