Packing for Puerto Vallarta is rather easy, as your basic necessities won’t change a good deal from season to season. Yes, summer is hot and humid, so cool, comfortable clothing is a must. And yes, it’s smart to pack a sweater or light jacket for winter evenings. For the most part, however, your wardrobe and accessory needs will remain much the same regardless of the time of year.

Clothing and Shoes

Swimsuits are a must in Puerto Vallarta, of course, as is basic resort-style clothing like shorts, short-sleeved shirts and sandals. Women may also want to pack cover-ups, pareos, sarongs and other beachwear. And if you’re planning to dine at upscale restaurants like Café des Artistes or at local luxury resorts, slacks and button-down shirts are appropriate for men, sundresses or the like for women.

Both the clothing and shoes you pack should reflect the type of activities you’re likely to engage in during your stay. A pair of sneakers or other comfortable shoes are recommended for shopping or hiking excursions. Golfers wishing to play top local courses like Vista Vallarta or Punta Mita may want to bring their own golf shoes and a collared shirt, too.

Accessories

Sunscreen is highly recommended, regardless of the time of year, and sun shading apparel and accessories such as hats and sunglasses are also a good idea.

You should definitely bring a camera — a smart phone works, but you might want to sign up for an international plan before using it to call friends and family stateside - and a waterproof camera if you intend to take advantage of any of the area’s superb water-based activities. Insect repellent is recommended during the summer months, and since this is also the rainy season, an umbrella can come in handy.

What to Pack, What to Buy, What to Rent

All of the above listed accessories are readily available at local shops, if you prefer to travel light. Likewise, resort clothing and beachwear boutiques can provide much of your necessary wardrobe. However, if you already own most of the necessary items, it’ll be easier on your vacation budget to bring rather than buy them.

If you are taking any medications, you should bring enough to get you through the trip. Local pharmacies can probably provide what you need, but it’s best not to leave such things to chance. Contact lenses wearers should bring a back-up pair, plus carrying case and solution. Shampoo and other basic grooming items will probably be provided by your resort, but if you prefer a particular brand, you may want to find space for it in your luggage.

Families traveling with small children do not need to pack tons of toys and accessories.
