In the State Registry Office 4 in Tepic, Nayarit, the union of Daniel Izcoalt and Pedro was held to be binding.

Daniel and Pedro got married on July 1st, 2014 making this the first gay wedding in Tepic, Nayarit, and also in the whole state of Nayarit.

After a year of legal proceedings before the Supreme Court of Justice (CJF), the couple received an injunction from a federal judge. The President of the National Association of Civil Cohesion Diversities for Sustainability (Codise), Jaime Cobian Zamora, was the spokesperson for Daniel and Pedro.

Local civil authorities had refused under Article 135 of the Civil Code, which defines marriage as "a civil contract by which one man and one woman are united in society to perpetuate the species, with respect for each other, equality and mutual aid."

However, the judge determined, based on the principles of equality and non-discrimination, that this Article precludes the Constitution because "it violates the principles of equality and non-discrimination" in Articles 1 and 4 of the Constitution, as reported in a statement by CJF.

"This distinction is discriminatory to unreasonably deprive gay couples to enjoy the benefits of the legal institution of marriage, which includes not only the right to access the associated benefits that this figure implies, but also to the rights and benefit materials that laws provide them," the judge ruled.

The State Registry Office will continue to manage their benefits, such as social security rights.

"We're going to stick together in order to exercise these rights, and all others that apply to them," stated Zamora.

He continued that it is expected that a group of eight other couples will start proceedings for same-sex marriages in Nayarit.
