Ronda & daughters finally meet Cali at the Ferry

Operation “Send Cali Home” took a LOT of cooperation and coordination but was a great success!

It started in March when Steve Stowell rescued a beautiful 5-month old long-haired calico kitty which had been dumped on the Isla Cuale. She was very affectionate and had obviously lived in a home.

PuRR Project took over and in April, Ronda Johnson of Nanaimo spotted her at Plaza Marina and decided to take her home to Canada. Unfortunately, West Jet could not take more animals on her flight so she left without her kitty.

She was then adopted & later returned by another family after they decided to travel for the summer.

Then PuRR contacted Ronda in Canada, who agreed to take Cali if someone could get her as far as Vancouver.

We spread the news and heard from Keith & Faye Cardenas who had recently lost a beloved cat but still had the carrier and the reservation for their return to Vancouver on May 31st.

Danielle Ward & her family had also recently lost their cat and asked if they could foster Cali in the meantime. PuRRfect!!!!

On the other end in Vancouver, Victor & Tatiana Domilovskiy offered to meet the late-night flight, keep Cali overnight and then take her to meet Ronda at the ferry from Victoria! Whew!

It was a lot of e-mailing and planning but all worth it.

Ronda reports that Cali is overcoming her shyness and feeling right at home now. A huge thank you to all the participants who helped make a huge difference in one little kitty-kat’s life.

Shelter Visitors

We are always delighted when folks want to take time from their busy vacation schedule to go visit the ranch!

So we were happy to hear that Brendan Harris and Louise Daly were planning to return to Vallarta for a few days and that they wanted to spend some time with the kitties.

Brendan is a professional photographer and took some GREAT photos for PuRR Project when they lived here. He took more on this visit and we look forward to seeing one of them in the 2015 Calendar!!

Our regular scheduled Wednesday visits to the shelter will resume in the Fall……and we need volunteers with cars to help!!! Please contact Pam Sullivan at toursoftexas@hotmail.com if you will be staying in Vallarta next winter and can help drive people to the shelter.

Adoption News

This is one amazing PuRR story!

Recently we received a message from a young lady, Ana Margarita Rodriguez, who had brought a rescue cat to live at the shelter back in 2011. She was unable to give it a home back then, but always wondered how “Negrita” fared.

So she asked if she could visit the shelter and look for her. We said OK but seriously……one black cat among a LOT of nameless black cats that live on the grounds?? Not an easy task!

But she remembered long silky hair, green eyes and distinct eye teeth and lo & behold, we eventually found her.

Ana came back to visit her again and again, and then, with her new husband’s approval, decided to adopt her.

Ana reports that after a day of hiding under the bed she has made friends with kitty Tinkerbell and golden lab Nico in her new Forever Home. Meow!

Shelter News

May 2014: The summer rains started this week, always a mixed blessing! It helps with the dust from the road but the road becomes almost impassable with each hard rain.

The parcel of land adjoining the shelter has been used to grow corn and pasture livestock until recently. It has been purchased by someone who has cleared the land and started a nursery, growing garden plants for wholesale.

They were burning loads of debris from the cleared land and the smoke was causing respiratory problems for our kittens and also Jose & his family!

After numerous complaints from our volunteers, they have agreed to stop the burning…….and just in time! Jose’s wife Hilda had her baby last week, their fourth. Congratulations on little Celia. Mom & baby doing just fine.

Jose did a “cat inventory” this month and counted around 125 cats having dinner in the yard each evening. With the cats & kittens in the clinic & various bungalows, that’s a population of about 155 hungry mouths to feed right now.

With the start of our tropical summer weather, it is a great time to look in your closet and see what you aren’t wearing!

If you haven’t worn it in 6 months, you probably aren’t ever going to! So why leave it in the back of the closet to get all musty and smelly?

With two locations it is easier than ever to donate your gently used men’s or women’s clothing, handbags, shoes & accessories.

The original store at 280 Jacarandas in Old Town is open Tuesday thru Saturday from 11-7 and the new Plaza Marina location Monday thru Friday from 10–6.
