Kayak.com reports Puerto Vallarta is the number one trending destination for flight searches for summer 2014, up 59% compared to last Memorial Day.

Even better news is that gay travelers are finding slightly lower airfares to Puerto Vallarta than last year. Additionally, many airlines are announcing new flights schedules to the city. Once LGBT travelers reach Puerto Vallarta they are finding a new, chic, trendy gay mecca after the city has invested millions in improvements for the gay Romantic Zone. Sophisticated LGBT travelers are finding Mexico's gay beach capital has many luxury accommodations, more infrastructure improvements, and a thriving gay beach scene.

Casa Cupula Luxury Gay Hotel owner Don Pickens confirms this news. Casa Cupula has had record occupancy since December 2013 and advance occupancy for June 2014 is more than double that of last year. In fact, normally the hotel is closed in September for renovations but this year Casa Cupula will be open due to increased summer demand in 2014.

Paul Crist, owner of Puerto Vallarta's Hotel Mercurio, tells GAYPV that his establishment has also enjoyed similar occupancy trends during the same period.

Increased airline service, economic recovery in the US and increased promotion of LGBT travel to Vallarta have all helped improve LGBT tourism in PV markedly this year. While the polar vortex sent many vacationers south, gay travelers are choosing Puerto Vallarta which has resulted in a record breaking 2014 to date for hotels like Casa Cupula, catering to the luxury gay traveler. Overall visits to Vallarta were up more than to any other Mexican beach destination.

While violence against tourists was never especially problematic in PV, Mexico's reputation in general has improved as violence in other parts of the country and media hype has subsided.

The success and increased promotion of PV's second gay pride has contributed by putting PV on the gay map again, and a whole new generation of younger travelers discover the benefits of the destination. One of those benefits is cost, since overall a PV vacation can be a fraction of that in Hawaii.
