PUERTO VALLARTA - The Lido Beach Club hosted a mass ceremony in which same-sex couples symbolically committed to their love or reaffirmed their marriage vows in front of friends and family.
On Saturday, 5 couples gathered at the Lido Beach Club, located on Los Muertos Beach, to pledge their love in front of ministers Adriana García and Maurice Monette, who led the symbolic commitment ceremony.
Maurice Monette works as a management consultant for non-profit organizations preserving the environment in the Sea of Cortez. He is a painter and writer and the author of Confessions of a Gay Married Priest: A Spiritual Journey.
Adriana García is the Los Mangos Library Director. Originally from Mexico City, she has a long standing history of work with non-profit organizations. Adriana said that “while the service will not legally unite the couples in attendance, the event is being held to give the LGBT community an opportunity to participate in a rite of passage that many take for granted.”
For the newlywed couples, the Lido Beach Club offered a glass of champagne to celebrate and an invitation to enjoy the day at the beach club.
The Vallarta Pride Steering Committee provided the couples a certificate as a symbol of their commitment to one another and the couples were photographed on one of the most popular beaches in our destination by a professional to preserve the moment forever.
All couples were also entered in a contest to win a honeymoon package at Casa Cupula, an artisanal chocolate basket provided by Xocodiva, $500 pesos gift certificate at Café des Artistes, $100 USD gift certificate at Diamonds International and $1,000 pesos gift certificate from Trattoria Michel.
This event was designed to promote LGBT rights and LGBT tourism in Puerto Vallarta. While gay marriage is not legal in the state of Jalisco, event organizers are interested in promoting Puerto Vallarta as a destination for LGBT symbolic weddings or honeymoons.
