President Calderon Attends RN Regatta RivieraNayarit.com

As part of the Mexico Cup Regatta Olympic Edition, the Governer's Cup and Gold Cup, featuring ocean racers (full size ocean racing sailboats) commenced on Sunday, March 11, following the 10:30 Opening Ceremonies, and will continue through Saturday, March 17.

The Marina Riviera Nayarit at La Cruz is abuzz with activity.

The Mexican President, Felipe Calderón, was in attendance yesterday and was accompanied by the Governor of Nayarit, Roberto Sandoval, and his counterpart from Jalisco, Emilio González Márquez, who also witnessed the complete course of 25 nautical miles including 32 vessels of 16 countries that were entered in the race class.

Before giving the start signal, Calderón gave a short message to competitors - both in Spanish and English - using the closed-circuit radio. In the message he thanked them for their visit and participation, wishing "good seas and best winds", as sailors traditionally do.

He continued, "This event in Riviera Nayarit is very important because it helps to generate employment for many, many families in both Nayarit and Jalisco."

The sailing organization presented Calderón with a replica of the Mexico Cup inscribed with the names of the winners, while Nayarit Governor Sandoval presented him with a miniature sailboat decorated with traditional Huichol art.

In their ongoing efforts to assimilate the village into the Marina and the Marina into the village, Amigos de La Cruz is hosting a booth at the Regatta Copa Mexico "Command Center" which is the hub for all activities.

This is the first time that the home town charity organization has been allowed to participate in this very high visibility event. They thank the Marina owners and Management for this unique opportunity.

"We are very excited about this, albeit a very last minute confirmation. We are selling Amigos merchandise, as well as soliciting contributions and 'spreading the Amigos word'."

Additionally, they have prepared an Amigos handout that lists music and dining specials in La Cruz to encourage the guests and participants to linger in La Cruz and enjoy the many amenities.

"We would like to thank everyone who has come forward to volunteer their time for the booth and we look forward to having some real fun with some new Amigos."
