Mardi Gras / Carnaval is the Roman Catholic celebration of the beginning of Lent. In much of the Latin world the night before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, is celebrated with parades, music, street parties and colorful public displays of costume and dance.

It is a major event, one of the largest tourist attractions, in cities such as Rio de Janeiro, Mazatlán, New Orleans, Barranquilla and Veracruz.

Puerto Vallarta has had a Mardi Gras parade for only a few years but in that time it has become one of the largest, if not the largest, parade in this city. 10s of thousands of people gather along the streets to celebrate with this parade. People do not just watch a Mardi Gras parade, they are part of it.

It is the only parade in Vallarta that is open to all. Anyone can register and enter. Popular night clubs, major businesses, small businesses, social groups, bands, public service organizations and individuals have all participated.

This parade is large, extravagant and colorful. The most recent parade route has included the new Malecón and parts of the Zona Romantica.

The parade is self-supporting and financed by commercial sponsorships and a small fee asked of participants.

Puerto Vallarta’s next Mardi Gras parade will be held on Fat Tuesday night, March 4, 2014. It is a proven major tourist attraction and provides a great deal of excitement and enjoyment to the residents and tourists visiting our city.
