Jalisco State Legislation Supports Same-Sex Couples CNN Mexico

This Thursday the Jalisco Congress approved the Free Cohabitation Law, a new legal entity that will permit same-sex couples to establish a legal relationship and thereby share rights like social security. Its guarantee of rights to claim pensions, inheritance, and social security benefits between same-sex partnerships in particular generated intense congressional debate. (Major cities in the state of Jalisco are Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara.)
 
Legislators of the Party of the Institutional Revolution (PRI), the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD), and the Ecological Green Party constituted the 20 votes with which the new legislation was approved. Opposing them were 15 votes from the representatives of the National Action Party and the Citizens’ Movement.
 
Representatives who supported the proposal said that it would promote equality and amplify the human rights of all Jalisco’s inhabitants. Through a press release, the Congress said that the legislation “will recognize different types of family.”
 
“This legislation refers to the legal act performed when two or more people of different or the same sex, of majority age and with legal capacity, voluntarily establish a common home based on continuity and mutual support,” the representatives explained.
