At a press conference yesterday, the owners of the Teatro Vallarta announced the closure and dismantling of the theater.

Two reasons were given to the media for this surprising announcement. One was the lack of profitability from sparse attendance to the theater's major cultural events, shows and performances. The second is the lack of government support for requested resources.

Director General of the Plexon Group, Manuel Díaz, owner of Teatro Vallarta, stated in an interview that the budget request submitted to the Chamber of Deputies (la Cámara de Diputados) of 6 million pesos was declined this year due to Teatro Vallarta not being a civil partnership, but a private company, even though funding was provided in the past.

Manuel Diaz continued that because the cultural complex has not been profitable since its construction, and now with these apparent limitations for government resources, the need for dismantling was consensual to avoid further losses.

It was hoped that the general public attendance would increase over the 3.5 years that Teatro Vallarta has been presenting great cultural events and high level shows that add higher production costs than conventional theaters.

Teatro Vallarta has presented great performances such as international ballets from Russia and Hungary, famous artist concerts, philharmonic orchestras, live from the Met, and many others. Without the support of the community in appreciating the production of these high quality and costly events, it is not possible to continue, especially without the government funding.

It is hoped that this is a temporary closure.
