Colonia del Toro is an attractive middle-class neighborhood about twelve blocks directly east of the main plaza and church of Pitillal, a humming suburb of Puerto Vallarta.
On a very hot Monday (92 degrees with 75% humidity), I walked a couple of dozen blocks putting up colorful flyers for the clinic. No bulls in sight – only a few horses. A Venetian-style bridge was built in an arroyo in order to allow pedestrians to navigate a flooded street during heavy rains. I stopped to buy a hibiscus drink and then bought six bags of dried hibiscus for 20 pesos each.
On my way back to the car from the plaza, I saw an old woman sat on a chair next to a small wooden table covered with cheeses for sale. I bought some manchego, a delicious hard cheese made from sheep's milk – great for quesadillas. As I reached my car, I made my last purchase for 50 pesos – a very sweet watermelon sold from the back of a truck.
When Paulina and I arrived at the clinic a bit before 9:00 am on Wednesday, normally our quietest day, at least a dozen people were already waiting for us. One family had taken buses all the way from Las Palmas, a small town in the foothills of the Sierra Madres, an hour´s drive away by car. Another couple brought a young mama cat and her four beautiful kittens and never returned for them.
Although the desired number of sterilizations per day is twenty-five, our two vets sterilized thirty-eight animals on Wednesday and thirty-two on Thursday.
Adoptions
Handsome “Hans,” whose life was saved by clinic director, Paulina Stettner. This beautiful dog´s owner kept him for breeding purposes only. Hans was literally starving and also suffering from TVT. Paulina cured him with several sessions of chemotherapy and found a great home for Hans.
“Daisy,” the mama cat saved from euthanasia with her three babies. Griss Gutiérrez fostered and found a great home for her.
The mama cat brought to the clinic and left there. She was adopted by her AngeliCAT foster home.
One of the mama´s Siamese-mix kittens – at AngeliCAT adoptions at Plaza Caracol on Friday - plus another kitten from the AngeliCAT refuge - to the same family.

Literally thousands of street cats, hundreds of cats in refuges, dozens of dogs and cats at the Centro de Acopio.
“Oso,” a beautiful male Golden Retriever mix was rescued by Barbara Drucker. He is young, well behaved, affectionate, neutered and vaccinated. Please contact: babslou9@aol.com.

A purebred Doxie that had been at the Acopio for months. In a foster home, he will fly to Canada via NOBARS in September.

Lost Ladie: Rescued and Escaped from Foster Home
“Ladie,” an adorable female Terrier mix, also from the Acopio and scheduled to go to Canada. She escaped while being walked by a foster parent on calle Danamarca in colonia Brisa del Pacifico, which is close to the Acopio. Please call the Acopio if you find her, (322) 293-3690.

Extra Clinic - Important
Because of the recent inundation of kittens on the Isla Cuale, Colina is hosting an extra clinic day on Monday, August 19 beginning at 9:00 am. Please help collect kittens and unsterilized cats. Most sterilized cats have a notched ear.

August 14-17 - Las Juntas - next to the delegación (government office building), just off the main square. Enter the colonia and drive all the way into the plaza.
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday – 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. Saturday – 9:00 am to 12:00 noon.
Arrive early. Twenty-five animals per clinic is our limit. No food or water after midnight before surgery day. Animals must be at least 8 weeks old. They will be treated for parasites, fleas, ticks and mange, if it is present. Pregnancies terminated on request. Euthanasia performed if animal critically ill or injured. All services are free.
Cost for one-week clinic is $1,500 USD.
