I have been to Puerto Vallarta twice for one day, each time while on cruises. I loved it both times and have vowed to go again for a longer stay to really explore the city and its beautiful surroundings. (It’s on my ever-growing travel list.) Each time I’ve been there, though, I’ve done the same thing, and if I were planning my next trip there, I’d do it again. It’s one of my favorite Puerto Vallarta activities:  Chico’s Paradise.

Chico’s Paradise is about a 30 to 45-minute drive out of Puerto Vallarta into the mountains above Mismaloya. The drive alone is stunning with views of the coast, mountains and jungle. You can arrange for a taxi or van to take you there and wait while you eat and explore. Each time we’ve negotiated a set price with our driver that included a brief city tour, stops along some of the scenic look-outs in the city, and the trip to Chico’s Paradise.

On our first trip to Chico’s Paradise we were traveling with my mom and grandparents. My mom wanted to try ziplining but my grandparents and the kids (2-years-old and an infant at the time) obviously did not. Chico’s had the perfect compromise for us all with plenty for the non-adventurous (and my husband who – wonderful that he is – agreed to stay with the kids) to do while my mom and I ziplined.

While we got “suited-up” for our trek, the rest were seated at a table in the open-air restaurant overlooking the river and waterfall below. There are divers that make fingernail-biting jumps off the rocks into the water far below. Be sure and bring some tip money; U.S. dollars work just fine.

There are a few local craftsman selling their wares. The kids bought bracelets with their names woven in them and thought it was fun to watch them being made. Add a couple of ride-on machines (which can be worth the quarters if the kids are getting restless towards the end) and parrots and the time was well-filled.

A great family dining location

The zipline was fantastic. It runs across the river and through the mountains. It is quite a hike to get to the lines, but a reasonably fit person should be fine. There are shaded resting areas with water available along the way. The lines themselves are exciting rides with breath-taking views.
