The U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) infiltrated the telecommunications network of Mexico's National Security Commission (CNS) and accessed data and email, the German weekly newspaper Der Spiegel reported today.
As part of the espionage action, dubbed Operation White Man, IP addresses were collected, as well as employee email and diagrams of surveillance and security agencies' structures.
According to Der Spiegel, which has a weekly circulation of 1.1 million, the spying came to light on Oct. 20, when it was announced that President Enrique Peña Nieto was the victim of espionage when he was running for office in 2012.
Mexico's National Security Commission proposes programs and actions to ensure public safety; manages and oversees criminalistics and police personnel databases; and coordinates the surveillance and protection of strategic installations in the country.
The current revelations join others made in recent months by the O Globo television network in Brazil and Der Spiegel itself, according to which the United States infiltrated email accounts of the Mexican presidency during the administration of Felipe Calderón (2006-2012).
