The number of lives taken in Mexico’s drug trade are still staggering and heart-wrenching, with tens of thousands of lives reportedly taken or disappeared in the last six years this number includes worrying numbers involving journalists.  A movie telling this story through the book “Midnight in Mexico: A Reporter’s Journey Through a Country’s Descent into Darkness” may soon hit the big screen.

“In the last six years, more than 80,000 people have been killed or disappeared in the Mexican drug war, where trafficking is a multi-billion dollar business,” said Alfredo Corchado, the Mexico City bureau chief for the “Dallas Morning News.”

The number of journalist killed is worrying: 69 dead since 1994, whether there was a confirmed motive or not, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Corchado himself has come close to joining those dreaded ranks as he has reported that in 2007 he received a tip that he was being targeted by the Zetas drug cartel. Instead of fleeing, he went in search of sources to find out if the threat was real. That led to his writing “Midnight in Mexico.”

Variety reports that Canana, a production company founded by producer Pablo Cruz and actors Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal, has optioned the big screen rights to Corchado’s book.
