Does Mexico have a horizon?  Or, to use a less metaphorical terminology, does the country have a future? The question, at the end of the year, is not only relevant but necessary.

If we view it with the enthusiasm of the political class, who live within their masturbation fantasies, the future is promising. It is full of modernization, of reforms central to the nation's health, wealth and participation in global markets. If, however, we view it from reality, that is from everyday experience, the horizon is as rarefied as the air of Mexico City. Day after day, beyond the virtual atmosphere created by politicians, Mexicans are faced with an alley walled in by organized crime, the networks of State impunity, the powers that be and an unremarkable, arrogant, corrupt and deeply dysfunctional political class.

The structural reforms - cooked-up and approved without consulting the public, through the complacency of bovine and obedient lawmakers (the traditional trademark of the old regime) to the dictates of the stud of Los Pinos [Peña Nieto, in the presidential residence], "the man who does no wrong", as the most servile often say - are nothing more than so many other contributions to this complex and frightening web of violence and crime.
