MEXICO CITY - Mexico's national human rights watchdog says the government committed a string of errors in its handling of the 2010 slaying of 72 migrants by a drug cartel.

The National Human Rights Commission said Friday that the mistakes delayed the identification of the dead and the investigation of the crime.

The commission said investigators failed to gather forensic evidence, preserve bodies and perform autopsies on time. Twelve of the dead remain unidentified and buried in a common grave.

The commission says at least 12 federal and state officials committed significant errors.

Investigators said the migrants were killed for refusing to join the Zetas drug cartel and their bodies dumped on a ranch in the town of San Fernando in the border state of Tamaulipas.
