The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (CIDH) asked the Mexican government for “specific” policies for those forcibly displaced within Mexico, whose situations have magnified “exponentially” as a result of the uncontrolled violence due to the war against drug trafficking launched by the government of [former Mexican president] Felipe Calderón.

The international organization stressed that this is a problem which differs from other migratory phenomena and which requires special attention.

“The CIDH values the passing of the General Law of Victims, but without prejudice to that, it would be very important to advance more specific public policies about the subject and to move towards a federal law about the question of forced internal displacement,” indicated Felipe González, reporter on the Rights of Migrants.

The situation of those forcibly internally displaced in Mexico captured the attention of the CIDH hearing in Washington, with various NGOs and representatives of Enrique Peña Nieto’s government in attendance.
