According to a report by the Motherhood Childhood Population Fund, produced by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Mexico ranks number one among all OCED countries in pregnancies among females between the ages of 15 and 19.
The report said, “In developing countries, teenage pregnancies are more likely among girls from households with lower levels of education and income in rural areas.” It noted that among the causes are widespread poverty, child marriage acceptance by communities and families, as well as inadequate efforts to maintain girls in school.
Education is the answer said the report: “Girls who stay in school longer are less likely to have children; education prepares girls for work and livelihood, raises their self-esteem and improves their position in the home and in the community, and it allows them to have more influence on decisions that affect their lives.”
Of all the OECD countries Mexico has the highest birth rate in adolescents and young adults between 15 and 19 years: 64.2 per thousand births, while Switzerland has the lowest with 4.3.
