MEXICO CITY - Leftist parties in Mexico are preparing to file an appeal with the Supreme Court for the right to a referendum on the energy reform.

Congresswoman Aleida Alavez of thee Democratic Revolution Party (PRD), explained that this was the correct way to legally enforce the role of Mexicans in an issue of national importance, such as the constitutional changes enacted last week.

According to Alavez, who is the vice president of the executive board in the Chamber of Deputies, the legal route is to lodge the appeal before the Supreme Court, and that step would be resolved within a period of two months.

Regarding this action, which she said was also backed by the Labor Party and the Citizens Movement, Alavez said that the appeal would not stand against the energy reform.

"This is an appeal promoted by the people to legitimize their sovereignty and their right to intervene in this matter of great significance," she said.

For his part, PRD secretary general Alejandro Sanchez said that the three left parties had launched a call for a nationwide demonstration against privatization of the energy sector on Jan. 31.

On Friday, President Enrique Peña Nieto passed a law allowing private investment in the area of hydrocarbons for the first time in 75 years, in what he called a historic step for Mexico.
