MEXICO CITY - Inflation in Mexico picked up pace toward the end of the year as tourism packages, air fares and subway fares pushed overall consumer prices up more than expected in the first half of December.
The consumer-price index rose 0.40% in the first two weeks of the month, moving the annual rate to 3.86% from 3.62% at the end of November, the National Statistics Institute said Monday. The increase was above the 0.35% median estimate of eight economists polled by The Wall Street Journal. Core CPI, which excludes energy and fresh fruit and vegetables, rose 0.30% to an annual 2.75%.
Lower mobile-phone rates and a drop in prices of some fresh produce offset the higher energy and transport costs in the two-week period.
In addition to the seasonal increase in tourism costs, the Mexico City government raised fares on the capital's highly subsidized subway system by 67% on Dec. 13.
