French researcher Gilles Eric Seralini claims GM food lobbyists pulled study from journal. (Euronews)

Multinational companies that manufacture genetically modified organisms [GMO] are pressuring prestigious scientific journals to retract studies that confirm damage to health by consuming these products, warned representatives of the Union of Scientists Committed to Society.

The latest case involves research published in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology, in which Gilles Eric Seralini confirmed liver damage, increased mortality and susceptibility to carcinogenic tumors in rats fed Monsanto GM corn.

The Editor-in-Chief of that publication maintained that there is no scientific fraud, "although the results are not wrong, they are not conclusive."

Never before has this argument been grounds for a scientific retraction, said Elena Álvarez Buylla, researcher at the Institute of Ecology at the UNAM [National Autonomous University of Mexico]. She noted that the study on which the journal's retraction is based lacks arguments and violates good scientific practice; moreover, science is continuously self-correcting.
