Jessica Saiden Quiroz, head of The State Population Council (Consejo Estatal de Poblacion), revealed that everyday six yucatecans leave the State in search of the ”American Dream”, according to the latest statistics.

This year, 2,284 have left Yucatan, most of them from the municipalities of Oxkutzcab, Akil, Buctzotz, Hocabá, Motul, Sacalum, Cenotillo and Dzidzantún.

The largest number of migrants are from Cenotillo and Oxkutzcab, only the latter municipality has more than 15 thousand Yucatecan living in the United States.

For Saiden Quiroz, Yucatecan migration is incomparable with the number of foreigners living in the state, because so far this year 919 foreign people have registered to permanently live in the state.

“In 2013, 919 foreigners came to Yucatan and 2, 284 Yucatecans left the country, representing a difference of 1, 365 people going out, compared to those coming in from different countries.” she explained.

The director of COESPO estimated that for every one hundred thousand people in Yucatán, seven live abroad.

She stated that on December 18 the International Migrants Day will be commemorated. Several forums will be held during this day in which the issue will be addressed.
