With more than 12 million Mexicans now living outside of their country, the Consultative Council of the Mexicans in the Exterior Institute (CCIME) says there needs to be an easier way for migrants to get their voting credentials and vote electronically.

CCIME Chicago representative Carlos Arango said that several recommendations have been made in respect to migrant electoral-political rights, such as a law that would require each political party to have at least one migrant in the first five positions of the five plurinominal lists. This, he said, would guarantee that there is migrant representation in Congress.

Under the current model, only Mexicans with up-to-date electoral credentials can cast a vote from outside the country. There are only about 60,000 people who can do so, less than 1 percent of Mexicans living abroad.

Facilitation of credential inscription for migrants would help tap into this portion of citizens who contribute 21.2 billion pesos ($16.4 billion) in remittances every year.
