Around 500 teachers of the National Co-coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) protested outside the Ministry of Interior in Mexico City, Friday. After a face-off with the police, they smashed through barricades and lit torches.

The protest started as a march without incident, but tensions rose after a meeting with high-ranking officials, who turned down the teachers requests. Teachers began to hit and charge the three meter high steel fence until it tipped over, leaving the federal Anti-Riot Police exposed. Teachers plan to continue with their protest on Saturday.

Education Reform has been the cornerstone to President Enrique Pena Nieto's administration, meeting controversy and protest for its wide-ranging reform which will weaken the power of Mexico's teaching unions. Many unionists see the reforms as a lurch towards an Americanized system of privatized education.
