MEXICO CITY – Deputies from the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) and the Citizens Movement (MC) have accused Institutional Revolutionary (PRI) and National Action (PAN) parties of trying to impose a ruling on the initiative to regulate and sanction public demonstrations in Mexico City.

PRD and MC legislators said in a press conference on Monday that it’s not the responsibility of the Chamber of Deputies to approve an initiative on this subject and called upon the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) to express its opinion on the matter.

The deputies said that the Mexico City Public Demonstrations Law presented by PAN Deputy Jorge Francisco Sotomayor Chávez is to be voted on today without previous discussion.

PRD Deputy Roberto López Suárez said that the initiative “violates the human right of free expression” for Mexico City residents, and that PRD, MC and Labor Party (PT) deputies will debate and oppose it.
