Mexico’s Undersecretary for North America Sergio Alcocer said on Monday that the Mexican government will not do anything to “derail” the legislative process of immigration reform in the U.S.

Alcocer said that it is fundamental for Mexico that a “coherent” immigration reform is carried out in the United States, recognizing the economic and demographic realities of the region, such as the flow of workers.

He claimed that this reform is part of the “intention to make North America the most competitive region in the world,” and said that the government would not intervene or lobby for the immigration reform in any way.

“The greatest error that the Mexican government could commit would be to make itself an obstacle, a restriction that could derail the process. The Mexican government would not be the one affected, rather it will be the millions of people we are looking to protect,” Alcocer said.

He did not expand on what motives would prompt the Mexican government to become an obstacle to immigration reform.
