The Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) was recognized with the United Nations Human Rights Prize of 2013.
“The national Supreme Court has accomplished very considerable progress in promoting human rights through its interpretations and enforcement of Mexico’s Constitution and its obligations under international law” and “has set important human rights standards for Mexico and the Latin American region.”
Minutes after the announcement was made in New York City, the president of the Nation’s Supreme Court of Justice, Juan N. Silva Meza, commented at the start of yesterday’s plenary session that the prize constitutes recognition of the professional work done by the highest court for its exceptional contribution towards the promotion of fundamental liberties and rights and towards a new era marked by “constitutional reconstruction of the country.”
Additionally, he requested and obtained the permission of his peers to attend the award presentation on December 10 at the United Nations as part of the commemoration of Human Rights Day, which will also celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Office of the High Commission on Human Rights and the Vienna Declaration and Program of Action.
