President Enrique Peña Nieto received Tzotzil schoolteacher Alberto Patishtán Gomez at the National Palace this week.
Patishtán was pardoned by the president on October 31 following the amendments to the Federal Penal Code regarding pardons, because his trial showed consistent evidence of serious violations of human rights, particularly of due process.
Patishtán told the president that in the country’s prisons, there are many cases like his of indigenous and non-indigenous persons whose rights have been violated in prisons. He asked for them to be analyzed so that other prisoners can receive “the benefit that was given to me.”
President Peña Nieto said that he would seek similar cases.
