In 2013 the number of Latin Americans living in poverty stands at 164 million, or 27.9% of the population, of which 68 million (11.5%) are homeless, according to the report "Social Panorama of Latin America 2013," which was presented Thursday at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

The ECLAC report indicates that poverty affects some 164 million people in the region, a number unchanged from 2012. In comparison to 2011, the rates of 1.4% for poverty and of 0.3% for homelessness fell; nonetheless, "the pace at which they have been steadily falling for a decade slowed."

ECLAC stated that "in absolute terms, poverty remained stable in 2013 compared to 2012, when the poor also totaled 164 million people, although the percentage of the population in this situation trended slightly down (by 0.3 points)."

Presented by the Executive Secretary of ECLAC, Alicia Bárcena, the report adds that, "by contrast, the homeless that in 2012 totaled 66 million, rose to 68 million in 2013," an increase of 0.2 percentage points.
