Used Clothing a Big Business Along Mexico's Border

At warehouses around Laredo's La Ladrillera neighborhood, people from Mexico come to purchase used clothing to return home and resell the items.

Mexico bans the import of used clothing. With the ban, wholesalers are unable to make their own imports into Mexico. That leaves an opportunity for individuals to smuggle small quantities of clothing during their trips.

Mexican buyers say the articles are confiscated if they are found, although because of infrequent checks, they often cross back into Mexico with their products.

Mexican buyers often walk from the downtown Laredo border crossing at International Bridge 1 to these warehouses, and bring back their merchandise in hand carts.

They hope to double, triple or quadruple their investment by reselling the products in Mexico.
