Tens of thousands of people took to Mexico City's streets to protest against President Enrique Pena Nieto's energy reforms on the first anniversary of his inauguration.

Teachers, union members and anarchist activists joined a rally held by Pena Nieto's former rival Andres Lopez Obrador of the Party of the Democratic Revolution on Sunday.

"We are here to avoid a big robbery," Lopez Obrador told the crowd.

Protesters are angry at President Enrique Pena Nieto’s plan to allow foreign firms to invest in and collaborate with the state-owned oil giant Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex), whose independence from outside influence has been a source of national pride for decades.

One group of protesters held a massive banner declaring "NO to the sale of Pemex,". Another protester carried a sign in English telling Pena Nieto's party to "Sell your body. It's yours. The oil is mine."

Nieto's initiative, part of the energy reform proposed by Pena Nieto on August 12, would allow state-run oil company, Pemex (Petroleos Mexicanos), to form ventures with private energy firms who have been thrown out of the industry 75 years ago.
