A citizen initiative promoted in Mexico City seeks to reduce the salaries of legislators, public workers and the President by 50 percent.
According to a report published by Sin Embargo, the Reforma Tripe, a movement that has demanded austerity from the government of Mexico and launched a petition through Change.org, asking citizens to join this effort, which aims to cut the salaries of politicians in the country.
In Mexico City, people believe that their politicians win more than they ought to. In a 2012 report, CNN revealed the abysmal differences between the salaries of most workers in the country and the salaries of politicians.
Mexican deputies, the equivalent to a U.S. Representative, have the worst reputation among most citizens. In February, CNN released a report showing how in 2011, federal deputies spent 998,000 pesos on silk ties, baskets full of Arabic candies and leather binders.
2011's annual public account showed that Mexico's Chamber of Deputies spent $168,000 on wines, liquors and appliances "indispensable for the New Year's Eve ceremony".
